I saw the new Swamp Thing TPB, and while I appreciate DC putting it out, I still feel it warrants an archive edition. I buy the archives because they're an actual improvement on the original comics, and sadly, that's not the case with this TPB. I don't know if it's due to the printing, the thin paper, or the coloring, but it lacks the visual depth of the original comics. On top of that, the covers are printed in an inexplicable reduced format. It's a fine collection for anyone wanting an inexpensive way to acquire the books, but if Wrightson's Swamp Thing doesn't warrant the better treatment of the archive editions, I don't know what does.

p.s. Does anyone know if the original priniting of Dark Genesis looked any better?

By a strange stroke of luck, I bought the Roots of Swamp Thing Baxter reprints from the early 80's on ebay right before the TPB was announced. Those were quality paper and good coloring, though not bound in book form. With the new dark genesis, i doubt we'll see an archive but if you're looking to upgrade, hunt those out. They're pretty cheap.

I admit that I'm puzzled--given that all the production work is done, this could have been a cheap archive to produce.
I'm sure eventually an archive will be done, but this printing of the tpb has probably put that day off 5 more years.
What the hell were they thinking of?

The Wein/Wrightson SWAMP THING 1-10 is one of my all-time favorites.

I'm glad to see these stories back in print, but I agree the printing of the original covers makes no sense and diminishes the art.

The covers were printed the same way in the original 1992 printing of SWAMP THING ARK GENESIS trade. So they didn't just screw it up this time, the covers have been printed in two editions this way.

As Swamp Thing is now part of Vertigo, I would favour the same hard/soft approach as is taken with Sandman.

Isn't it common practice for the modern tradepaperbacks to reprint the covers reduced if at all, or even without the logo.
This isn't a practice I like or endorse, but am glad they ignored for the Crisis on Multiple Earths book.
The only time DC backpedaled and made an existing paperback an archive, was the Hawkman Archives, which was originally a paperback ten years previously. At least in the archive they added the additional Murphy Anderson pre-Hawkman #1 stories to make the book over 200 pages.
I don't know why DC did this. Was the Hawkman paperback a failure, or did DC correct and oversight, and the archive was a success?
I thought the book was too high at the time (INdeed the archives were only forty then) and passed on the book. I later got it for seven dollars in a bargain bin a few years later.
However, owning it does preclude me from buying the hardcover, since I already "have" the stories.
I wish DC would just make up their mind. Now they are doing "mini" archives, something like 150 pages in two volumes instead of one 300 page volume for Challengers. I don't think fans would mind volume two containing some Brown work, since he did most of the stories anyway.
Maybe two people wanted to write Kirby introductions?

I may be a hypocrite because I'd like to see a Kamandi or Jonah Hex archive, and not a Swamp Thing one, since that dozen issues of Swamp Thing have been reprinted many times, probably only less than Green Lantern Green Arrow, and I find neither of those things to be the best DC has to archive anyway.
They should archive stuff that is hard to find, scarce or warranted.

The Monster Society of Evil and Crisis were the two series I really wanted in book format. I would have glady paid 80 dollars for the former (didn't have to, thank god for Christmas) but paid only fifteen for the latter. Why? There was no way I'd ever have the money or luck to read the Monster Society of Evil in its original form without the book. I bought Crisis off the stand, and have re-read it occaisionally (Crisis is one of the few books that looked better as a comic than as a book> ) Crisis is still easily available in its' original form.

In my opinion, the new Swamp Thing book has more in common with the Crisis book than the Monster society. It is easily available in its' original form, or later reprintings, so give it out for a cheaper price.
